SOLUTIONS FOR MARIJUANA PACKAGING

Light, heat, and air must be controlled in order to retain the freshness of marijuana. Marijuana buds are typically packaged in PET vials with child-resistant closures, similar to prescription vials. These vials are usually made of amber or black PET.

Glass, PET, or PETG jars are the best options for transparent packaging. These can be used with several child-resistant and continuous thread closures. Manufacturers adopt digitally printed closures with these packaging options to provide clear opening instructions or promote the brand and trademark.

Edibles packaging varies because marijuana can be infused into practically any sort of food. On the other hand, most culinary manufacturers use jars, zip pouches, or even flexible packaging, frequently equipped with a child-resistant zipper/closure.

The government agency recently published the Michigan marijuana packaging rules and enforcement instructions for edible marijuana products. The manufacturer is responsible for knowing what warnings must be printed and what letter sizes must be adhered to on the label.

Rule 3(9) of the Marijuana-Infused Products and Edible Marijuana Product Rule Set specifies that a producer of edible marijuana products must follow the following guidelines:

  • Packages for edible marijuana products must not be shaped or labeled in a way that appeals to kids aged 17 or younger. Cartoons, caricatures, toys, graphics, forms, labels, or packaging that appeal to minors are not permitted on edible marijuana products.

  • Edible marijuana products should not be confused with confectionery available in stores. It is forbidden to use the words candy or candies on the container or labeling.

  • Edible marijuana products must not be shaped like a human, animal, or fruit, or have the likeness or contain features of a true or fictional human, animal, or fruit, including artistic, caricature, or cartoon depictions. Edible marijuana items with geometric shapes that are just lightly flavored with fruit are allowed.

  • Edible marijuana must be packaged in child-resistant, opaque packets or containers that fulfill the efficacy requirements. More than one serving of edible marijuana products must be packed in a resealable package or container that fulfills the effectiveness standards of 16 CFR 1700.15.

Producers of non-compliant packaged goods, according to the government, have the following choices:

  • Repackage the items in new, compatible containers.

  • Use the same or larger type than the terms frequently used in commercial sweets to clearly designate the product as a marijuana product, THC product, or cannabis product on the package with non-transparent stickers.

  • Stick non-transparent stickers on parts of the packaging for marijuana-infused edibles that aren't compliant.

  • Destroy the non-compliant product voluntarily.

  • Put non-transparent labels on parts of the packaging for marijuana-infused edibles that aren't compliant.

  • Adult-use merchants can employ a secure transporter to send marijuana items back to adult-use processors.

The agency also recommends licensees to fix "egregiously non-compliant" products or packaging right away – or as soon as feasible. Marijuana suppliers and merchants should read the warning bulletin and the underlying regulations carefully and promptly correct any non-compliant products or packaging
